1969 Type 3 Squareback

This project was shipped to us from Hawaii. Originally powered by a stock 1600 engine with approximately 45 horsepower, the owner asked us for a more modern driving performance car. His main complaints were the lack of horsepower and poor handling. The decision was made to build a 2110cc engine and to put in a 3.88 final drive transmission to maintain higher speeds at a reasonable RPM. This will dramatically increase the horsepower to 150, giving the customer the speed and response he was hoping for.

The suspension is a full Airkweld four-inch narrowed beam front end with custom 17 x 7 Smoothies. We also replaced the original wiring harness that was getting very brittle and had many issues with poorly done splicing and wiring that was melting. For stopping power, we installed Willwood brakes on all four corners to complete this beautiful “restomod” to the high level of performance the customer was looking for.

We applied a Wurth SKS Stoneguard undercoating to the pan, fender wells, trunk, engine compartment and under the rear back panels. This will keep everything nice and clean and help prevent the car from rusting in the salty Hawaiian climate.

The 1969 Squareback’s front- and rear-ends assembly and installation. Everything was replaced and upgraded. All new, high-performance components include a narrow front end, disc brakes, and shocks.  The rear-end has new shocks, disc brakes, 28mm Sway-Away torsion bars as well as Sway-Away adjustable spring plates. We also installed the rebuilt transmission and the new, 2110cc engine hand-built by our master engine builder.
